THE SMELL OF FALL

Yes, the smell of Fall is in the air, at least in Utah.  Sorry Janice, but I know Fall doesn't have a smell in Florida.  I have been watching over my father in Utah now for almost 9 months.  So, this is the first fall since I was 20 years old.  Cold air has a smell, a good smell.  Rain smells great.  The colors are amazing.  While I missed all the mountain leaves change colors, (I was in Houston), the trees in the valley are in all different stages of changing.  I put a couple of pictures at the bottom of the blog.

Now, on to the important stuff.  I can't imagine how, but I left off one of the new quilt projects from Market on the last blog.  WAITING FOR LOVE  is our first table topper.  It is 52" square and made to fit over your favorite table.  We used Basic Grey's new line, BLUSH  from Moda.  One layer cake and some yardage, so not only is it cute, but it is fast.  For all you  tweeter's out there, you should have already seen it.  Fat Quarter Shop tweeted it the first day of Market.

We also got a new picture for HONEY PIE, the new quilt using EDEN, for Moda, by Lila Tueller.  Isn't it great for a little girl's bed.

Since we are now talking about little girl's quilts, (what a segway), we have been very busy this week working on a new project.  Only hints for now.  It involves a little girl's bed, OZ fabric from Moda, and a magazine.  Ok, just a teaser, but we have to wait until February to see the final quilt also.

Now, those fall colors I promised.

And last, one of my favorite places, I have shot scenes from different areas in this valley.  This shot is looking over the Pine View resevoir up at Snow Basin, the local ski resort.  And yes, that is the first snow of the season.

MORE PICS -- NEW PROJECTS

We are almost back to normal.  I flew home yesterday through Las Vegas, Phoenix and then on to Salt Lake City.  Janice is almost caught up on all the orders.  Now we are busy doing the laundry and the grocery shopping and the cooking and, you know, the real stuff.

We had ten new projects for Market.  Three you have already seen here on the blog, and seven more, all made in the last two weeks.  Enough words, here are the pictures.

The first new design is MATCH BOX.  It is made from Moda's designer, Sweetwater, in their new line, MAKE LIFE.  It uses a charm square pack, a layer cake pack and a jelly roll with some yardage.  We will of course have regular fabric requirements listed also.  It is a big quilt, almost 70" x 80".  And as I told Janice, I always wanted a WHITE QUILT.

We shopped and shopped for Kaffe Fassett fabrics to put ALL TOGETHER NOW together.  Thirty fat quarters will give you this beautiful  quilt.

This is MY DEAR PRUDENCE.  A fat quarter bundle and a little yardage go together very quickly.  I loved this collection, SIMPLE ABUNDANCE from Moda.  The ric rac and the raw edged flowers add to the warmth.

Every one who saw this quilt, FEELIN ALRIGHT, did what we did, JUST SMILE.  Moda's new collection by Sanae, OZ, provides the happy yellow feeling.

Here they are, MAGGIE MAY'S.  This purse goes together quickly and has such a beautiful shape.  And if you love those great little Honey Buns from Moda, you can use it in this purse.

Last, but by no means least, THE ELLIE BAG.  This was a very popular choice at market.  Depending on the fabric, it can be multi-purpose for all ages.  We had stores cutting and kitting before market was even over.

HOME FROM MARKET

Wow, we made it.  What a whirlwind.  It started 2 weeks ago when I flew to Florida for the last minute sewing buzz.  We made two purses, four abbey bags and 5 quilts.  We had a week.  Then, we loaded up our little red boy scout trailer, and hit the road for houston.  We left late, of course, so we drove all night, except for the two hours we slept in a parking lot.  Pulled into Houston about 10 am and headed for the convention center.

Here is the best part, though.  Pictures of the booth.

We created this wall to show off all our bags and allow people to shop from both sides.

We put up the big letters just in case any one wanted to know who we are.

That is our first group of pictures.  We pulled into Florida this morning at 5 am.  I am flying back to Utah first thing in the morning.  I will post more pictures of our booth and some of our favorite friends from Market.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JANICE

Yes, today, is Janice's Birthday.  So all together now, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU.  One of the perks of being the partner who writes the blog is I can choose what to write about.  So while Janice would not share the announcement of her birthday, I will. 

I guess it would not be politically to correct to tell you her age, so let me just say that first, she is older than me.  (I just love that)  This would be when Janice would tell you she is only 9 months older than me.  Second, I will tell you that she graduated from high school one year before me.  (Nine months can mean alot.)  Third, and the best clue of all, Janice and I share different decades.   Fourth,  just in case you haven't got it yet, IT'S A BIGGEY.

Enough about her age, although it is an important birthday milestone, because it's not the age, it is the miles.  Wait, I think that is for cars.  I know we have talked about having a contest, but no, you cannot win a prize for guessing Janice's age.  Sorry.

There is a bit of quilting news in this birthday blog.  We received an email about the Abbey Bag from Melanie.  It includes a tip for putting the bag together. 

Here's what she said:

Hi Abbey Lane folks!

The abbey bag is adorable! And I am making them as gifts to my sewing friends. But I have a suggestion to make attaching the botton on top of the pin cushion easier:

I used a double strand of crochet cotton in a matching color, ran the needle up through the pin cushion, as instructed, attaching the button and back down.....but before securing it, I used a few dots of fabric/craft glue under the button, pulled the threads through and secured! Voila! Nice and secure.

HE LOVES IT, HE LOVES IT NOT

I don't know about your husband, but mine is a really hard person to please.  Project after project gets completed and he says "That's Nice."  Sometimes it is worse than that.  When I show him pictures of new designs, he gives his opionions, or in other words, tells me how to make changes and why I should.  I DON'T LISTEN VERY OFTEN.  I do have to say though, that the inspirations for "A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND", the diamond ring shape was his idea.

Back to the point at hand.  We just finished sewing a new Ellie Bag.  We used Free Spirit Fabrics.  We love artsy designs.  It is also in some of our favorite colors, orange and brown.  Now, my husband hates the color orange.   So, I showed him the bag in progress and to my surprise, he said "Wow, I really like it."  I am still in shock.  He then added, "I don't like the orange polka dot fabric though, but the rest of it is nice."  He went on to put in his two cents on which fabrics I should use for the handles.  I didn't listen.  After all, the orange polka dot was my favorite of the fabrics.  So, I will let ya'll issue your own opinion.

As the title states, "He loves it, He loves it not."  Where my husband loves it not most of the time, Janice's husband, Kevin, loves it all.  He even helps in quilt design, usually fishing or hunting themes.  Janice's husband does provide a great service for Abbey Lane Quilts.  He empties Janice's Abbey Bags.  He is constantly checking to make sure all three of Janice's Abbey Bags have the scraps and strings emptied to the garbage.  I am constantly trying to get him to offer this service to the general public, but no luck so far.  I hear Bribery might work.  Please send all reasonable offers.

WE LOVE FINISHED PROJECTS

We finished the new purse today, handles and all.  We absolutely love this bag.

 It is a perfect size and has a great shape. 

























The inside has two pockets, big enough for all my lip glosses and my pda.  It has a button closure to hold everything safe. 

Now, the fun part, a name.  As far as bags go, we are up to the letter "F".  We have been searching for a good name.  Janice's daughter-in-law, Nicole, was the one who gave us the idea for the bag,  she would like the name to be "Nicolette."  I have taken a liking to "MAGGIE MAY."  We are open for suggestions, however, you know our theme, Beatle Manie.  So let us know. 

Oh yeah, the only bad news, the pattern will not be ready until Quilt Market, the middle of October.  We will have several more fabric versions, though, between now and then.

The good news, "PAPER BACK WRITER" is now available.

We used a fabric collection from Moda, "AUTHENTIC", which is shipping hopefully this week into your local store.  The quilt uses 20 fat quarters and some yardage.  The pattern is for sale on our website, http://www.abbeylanequilts.com/.

That is it for today.  We are waiting for fabric from Moda for two more new quilts for Market.  We have a couple of other surprises in store.

THE FUN IS JUST STARTING

I have a very large collection of purses and bags.  I have spent quite a few years collected.  My mother had a huge collection also.  The thing I have learned about purses is while there are endless beautiful bags, the bag I like is not necessarily the bag you might like.  That's what is so great about a cloth bag that you make.  We all get to personlize a great design by chosing fabrics we love.  The newest bag, yet to be named, is like that.  I LOVE the fabrics I used.  It is also designed to make with leftover scraps or your favorites or those cute little Honey Buns from Moda.  Add a little yardage and you have a purse you will love.  Even though it is not done yet,  I had to show you some sneak peaks.  Since I took the pictures, I have added a binding, and tomorrow I will add the handles.  It is a great design.  Not to big, but still has plenty of room.  There will be two pockets on the inside.  How could you even think of having a bag without pockets.

Here is one of the front panel.  The striped pieces are made from little 1 1/2" strips sewn together. 

This beautiful piece is the inside of the bag.  You can't go wrong with a polka dot pocket.

Here it is.  I just love it.  The binding will be that cute brown polka dot.  There are also a couple of other surprises.

Here is the side view.  Love the piecing.  Ok that is all the pictures for now.  Having so much fun with this bag, forgot to tell you the other news. 

We finished another design today for RJR Fabrics.  The fabric isn't even coming out until late next spring.  It is scheduled for a magazine next summer.  No sneak peaks on this project.

More news, Janice finished quilting Paper Back Writer and the pattern is written.  All that is left is the cover shot and it will ready next Monday.
